Corrosion Intercept
Corrosion Intercept
Intercept Technology is a technological breakthrough into corrosion/static protection. Copper molecules have been chemically bonded to a polymer matrix, effectively creating a sacrificial anode out of the plastic/copper Intercept material itself. Traditional packaging methods used to protect components against corrosion are simply ineffective. Coatings are used in the form of oils or waxes, which is expensive to clean and hazardous. These methods simply slow down the corrosion process, but are affected by temperature and humidity.
Intercept technology takes a different approach. Products that are needing corrosion/static protection (engine blocks/axels even complete fighter jets and earth moving equipment) are simply put into Intercept material and shrink wrapped or depending on the application, put into a bag and sealed. No coating is needed on a product that you are needing to protect. NO OIL, NO WAX. 16 units of clay desiccants must be added per m3 to eliminate the humidity. Atmospheric gases that are now present in this sealed package naturally go to work. In a traditional packaging methods application, atmospheric gases will attack the coating as they are attracted to the metals below. The gases will penetrate the coating, it’s just a matter of time depending on the environmental conditions. (temperature & humidity) In a Intercept package, the atmospheric gases also naturally go to work. Zinc, being the least noble metal on the periodic table, would start corroding when the voltage of an atmospheric gas gets to about 1.2 volts. Intercept, being made from part copper and part polymer, actually starts corroding at about 0.6 – 0.7 volts. So, as these gases build up their energy to start the corrosion process, at 0.6 – 0.7 volts these atmospheric gases chemically react to the intercept. (the intercept material rusts) Due to the fact that no more atmospheric gases are entering the package, within 45 minutes the volume of air within the package is completely stripped of all atmospheric gases. Depending on the Intercept product used, the product will be protect from btw 2 – 15 years, without oiling. This is the only product suitable for medium to long term storage of components, as well as the exporting of sensitive materials.
